He had thought that he and his brother would be together forever. They had always been close even as they grew up in a world that many mortals rarely saw…maybe that was made them close. By knowing that they weren't the only ones in the world and not even the top of food chain as everyone else believed. But even if that was the case, they didn't seek to escape the dark world they were in. No, in fact they embraced it.
Bri himself became a Slayer, the police of the world of shadow, a trained warrior and enforcer of the Council and their rules. He was only 17 when he passed the Trials. His brother had been very proud of him and they celebrated long after Bri's ceremonial celebration and it had been well worth the next day's hang over.
It was a year later that his brother announced something. He had been bitten and turned by a Vampire. At first Bri was shocked but that soon dissolved into happiness for his dear brother. Vampires were sophisticated beings, far from the monsters of legend. And they were nothing like the being of legend either. Like their allergy to sunlight, a complete farce. It only weakened them and hurt their eyes and if they were left out in the sunlight long enough they got terrible sunburn. And stakes and holy water? Worthless. It's the head that you wanted to cut of or severely damage the brain to kill them. Vampires also no longer drink the blood of humans to the point of killing them without just cause. It was against the Law of the Council and Vampiric governing system. Besides if they went back to killing their prey, 'normal' people would learn of their existence and the world isn't ready for that just yet.
But his brother had been chosen and even if Bri had been against it, it would have done no good. It had already been done. However, it would mean that this would eventually break them apart. Bri was still mortal and his brother…well being a Vampire he would receive a very long life. Centuries, millennia even. But Bri never let that fact affect their relationship. He would always love his brother no matter what.
At least that was what he thought until his brother mysterious disappeared off the face of the earth. His Sire didn't even know where he was. Bri had looked for his brother and spent two years looking with not even a sign of him. Bri in the end had to move on. He couldn't keep looking for his brother for the rest of his life. His brother would have wanted him to live his life. And live it he did. He married and had twins with his high school sweetheart and he loved them more than life itself.
But then a three nights ago, something happened. Bri came home one night to find the bodies of his small children bleeding on the floor. Fear gripped his heart at the sight of his twin boy's broken and ripped bodies. His mind immediately went to his wife. Running through his home he looked for her and what he found brought him down to his knees. His wife was in their bed, spread out on the white covers, naked and in a puddle of her own blood. The Slayer had never known that he could feel so much pain or such a loss. And he knew who had done such an atrocity. His name was written on the wall in the blood of his family. His brother…was back. No, his brother would have never done such a thing. It was a monster in his brother's place.
Now here he stood before the Elders of the council, dressed in the dark clothing of his trade. Leather pants and combat boots, a jacket holding the insignia of a Phoenix on his left breast that was over the black t-shirt he wore. His fiery red hair was pulled away from his face as it normally was, back in a pony tail a few locks framing around his face. It would have reached past his shoulders if it were left loose. A long sword was at his side was the only visible weapon that he had. A gift from his wife for their first anniversary. And it would the instrument of his justice.
"You understand the mission before you Bri Donald?"
Bri hard sapphire eyes could have burnt hole through even the thickest wall. "Yes. I am an instrument of justice against those who seek to break the peaces of the worlds. I will bring in his head."
"And you understand the dangers of this mission. He had already killed three of our operatives."
Bri gloved hands clenched tightly. He knew the dangers but it was the anger and pain in his heart that would win. It burned like the fires of hell in his soul. "I understand Councilman."
"Than you are free to complete your mission. God be with you."
Bri turned on his heel and exited the hall of the Council Elders, the guards that were their straightening as they felt the malice that dripped from him. Going to the elevator, Bri turned and hit the button that would take him to the garage. Once the doors closed and he was on his way, Bri gave a mighty cry of pain and anger and punched the metal walls of the elevator. It was enough to leave an imprint of his fist and his hand throbbed a bit, but that was all. As a Slayer he had been trained to endure pain and he was infused with the strength that made the Slayers legendary so though his hand throbbed, he did not show any sense of pain other than the one in his heart. "Why? Why would you do such a thing brother? They were your family too…" He whimpered softly, tears blurring his vision.
The elevator came to a stop with a ding and the doors opened to reveal the garage. Going over to a blue motorcycle, he took the helmet off the seat and placed it on his head. He needed to clear his head, heart and soul before he took off to complete his mission. Getting onto his bike he turned the key before he tore out of the garage like the devil himself was at his heels. The slayer didn't really know where he would be going; all that he knew is that he had to calm down before it was too late. If he was distracted by stupid emotions he could make a fatal mistake. Then it came to him about where he could go to collect himself. He would go to St. Augustan's church to pray and just to calm down. He had always felt safe and a strange sort of comfort from the old church.
